Smitty's opened as Smitty's Pancake House in Calgary in 1960, and on day one the line for those buttermilk pancakes ran over two hours. Sixty-plus years later the pancakes are still made to the same recipe. The Place LaRue location has free parking in the lot, and buses on routes 54 and 205 stop right outside. Inside it has a family-casual feel. There are booths, it takes reservations, and the washroom is wheelchair accessible. On Friday, kids ten and under eat free with an adult entrée.
