TodayToday MENUMENU

Love our maps?

Every restaurant featured on KidsEatFree.ca gets its own specially crafted map -- drawn from its real streets, easy to read, responsive, and geographically true.

,
HAND-DRAWN, TRUE TO THE STREET

These aren't stock map tiles. Each one is built from the real ground around a restaurant -- the streets that frame its corner, the park across the way, the river down the block. North stays north, the cross-streets meet where they actually meet, and the favourites star sits where the front door actually is. Geographically correct, drawn in characters.

DRAWN AT EVERY SIZE

Every map is authored once, then drawn at whatever width fits -- a compact sketch for a narrow phone, a wider, more detailed view for a big screen. Here is the same corner at every size the library uses, scaled to sit together so you can watch the detail grow. The label on each is the screen width it is drawn for:

≤ 360px · 36 cols
360px · 40 cols
390px · 44 cols
412px · 46 cols
504px · 56 cols
588px+ · 68 cols

Astoria Shish Kebob House, Toronto -- one spec, drawn at every width and scaled to fit.

THE DRAW-AND-REDRAW

The animation up top is the fun part, and it's ours. Each map dissolves into a flurry of our own glyphs -- shades, road pieces, asterisks, arrows -- then reforms as the next spot. It's the old character-crush idea, rebuilt from scratch as a staggered per-cell scramble. It runs on our own little library, kef-maps.js, which holds each map, sizes it to your screen, respects reduced-motion, and quietly pauses the moment it scrolls out of view.

THE MARKS ON THE MAP

A small vocabulary does the work, and every mark is a glyph we drew ourselves into KEFira, our house font -- so it sits on the grid like any other character:

a featured location -- your favourites star
which way is north
parks and greenspace
playgrounds and play areas
rivers, lakes and waterfront
SEE THEM IN THE WILD

Every featured restaurant profile carries its own map, drawn for its exact address.
