ABOUT MANDARIN RESTAURANT

Mandarin began on December 8, 1979, when James Chiu, his brother George, Diana Chiu, and business partner K.C. Chang bought a small restaurant on Queen Street in Brampton that already carried the name. The a-la-carte format worked too well. Lineups grew unmanageable, so in 1986 the founders converted an expanded 9,000-square-foot Brampton location to buffet service and transformed the business. Franchising through employee partnerships started in 1988, sushi arrived in 2003, and the Canada Day free meal tradition, launched in 1996, drew over 15,000 guests in its first year.

Today Mandarin runs 29 locations across Ontario, employs over 3,000 people, and serves nearly 6 million customers a year. The restaurants are built for occasions: 12,000 to 15,000 square feet, seating for 300 to 500, waterfalls, aquariums, and over 150 feet of buffet tables with chef stations cooking dishes on demand.
