East Side Mario's opened in 1987 in London, Ontario under Prime Restaurants, built on the vibrant atmosphere of Manhattan's Little Italy and its Italian immigrant heritage. The original logo depicted the Statue of Liberty holding a tomato. The menu has stayed true to that idea: spaghetti and Mario's meatballs, chicken parmigiana, cheese cappelletti, Rustica pizzas, all in portions made for sharing, with the famous unlimited soup, salad, and garlic homeloaf alongside.

Cara Operations acquired Prime Restaurants in 2013 and rebranded as Recipe Unlimited in 2018, making East Side Mario's part of Canada's largest full-service restaurant company alongside Swiss Chalet, Harvey's, The Keg, and Kelseys. Recent restaurant designs nod to the San Gennaro street festivals that define Little Italy. About 60 locations operate across Canada today.
