Denny's started as Danny's Donuts, a 900-square-foot donut and coffee shop in Lakewood, California, in 1953. Twenty-four-hour service arrived in 1956, the name settled to Denny's in 1961, and the chain hit 1,000 locations across all 50 American states by 1981. The first Canadian Denny's opened in Vancouver in 1970, and today more than 70 locations serve Canadians. The towering highway signs became roadside landmarks, and the always-open model means Denny's is there after the hockey game, before the early flight, and at 3 AM when nowhere else is.
